WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN

COMPREHENSION

Your child will learn to follow story structure, plot, and character development through lively guided discussions in class, and online lessons and quizzes at home. Strong comprehension makes reading fun and rewarding.

NONFICTION & TEXTBOOKS

Your child will learn skills and strategies to meet the challenges of reading nonfiction. Students learn how to identify main ideas, recognize how information is organized, and retain what they read. They apply these new skills in nonfiction passages and science and social studies textbooks.

FLUENCY

Doing a substantial amount of reading in this program improves students’ fluency, the ability to read quickly, easily, and accurately. This makes reading effortless and pleasurable, so your child will become fully engaged in the books he or she reads.

LONG-WORD DECODING

Students learn to recognize prefixes, suffixes and syllables and practice an effective strategy for reading long words. Kids love this part of the program because it gives them the confidence to tackle more challenging reading.

INDEPENDENT READING

The most important thing your child can do to practice these skills and get ready for next year is read a lot. During this program, your child will read two classic children’s novels. Through guided class discussions, the teacher provides comprehension support and leads students to identify with the books’ characters and imaginatively participate in their adventures. This experience of being fully absorbed in wonderful books promotes a lifelong love of reading and is the basis for future academic success.

What happens in class?

Weekly classes are led by trained, enthusiastic teachers. Your teacher will work individually with your child to develop his or her skills.

What will my child do at home between classes?

Between classes, your child will complete independent reading assignments and interactive online lessons. Lessons cover skills like comprehension, reading nonfiction, and long-word decoding. The lessons are easy for students to follow and complete on their own. Technology support is available.

How do I choose which level of instruction is appropriate for my child?

Interactive online lessons are tailored to students’ current reading level. Use the following guidelines to determine what level is right for your child:

Weak Reader — Your child has struggled with reading in 3rd grade and experiences frustration while reading.

Average Reader — Your child has been on track with reading in 3rd grade.

Strong Reader — Your child has been very successful with reading in 3rd grade.

Can I attend class with my child?

Parents are welcome to attend all or part of any class with their child, but are not required to do so. Many parents enjoy observing the classes.

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have two simple options for taking a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule either an interactive online make-up lesson or a live make-up in another nearby class.

What is the class size?

To ensure that all students have a great experience, we cap enrollment at a maximum of 20 students. Your child will get personal attention from the teacher and have a chance to actively participate in group discussions.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students entering every grade level, so we encourage you to sign up everyone in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $30 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.
